The Riggs House was built between 1822 and 1835 by Samuel Riggs (b. 1760). The home was used as a stagecoach inn and stop for travelers in the time before the Civil War and then was used as an Improvised Field Hospital out of necessity during the Civil War. Troops from both sides of the war were cared for at this location. As the years passed, it was also used as a funeral parlor and a general store before ending its inhabitancy as a private family home.
For most of the 20th century, the Hobson family owned and resided in the home. Ill health and lack of funds led to the slow deterioration of the residence. It changed hands and some effort was put into restoration, but it has ultimately been unoccupied since 2000.
